Google DeepMind Partnership with the Republic of Korea

Google DeepMind has entered into a strategic partnership with the Republic of Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) to accelerate scientific discovery and cultivate AI talent. This collaboration establishes an AI Campus in Seoul to provide Korean researchers with access to frontier AI models and expertise to address national grand challenges.

Establishing the Seoul AI Campus for Scientific Research

Google will create an AI Campus within its Seoul offices to serve as a collaborative hub for Korean academia and research institutions. This facility is designed to support the Ministry of Science and ICT's "K-Moonshot Missions," which aim to improve research productivity and solve critical national challenges.

Google DeepMind will collaborate with research-oriented institutions, including Seoul National University (SNU) and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), as well as the Ministry's three AI Bio Innovation Hubs. The partnership focuses on applying advanced AI models to the following fields:

  • AlphaEvolve: A Gemini-powered coding agent used for designing and optimizing advanced algorithms in computing, math, drug discovery, and energy.
  • AlphaGenome: An AI model designed to analyze how mutations in human DNA sequences affect gene functions to advance genome biology and disease understanding.
  • AlphaFold: Leveraging existing adoption by over 85,000 Korean researchers to accelerate predictions for proteins, DNA, and RNA.
  • AI co-scientist: A multi-agent AI system acting as a virtual collaborator for brainstorming and verifying hypotheses, specifically for biomedical applications and the Ministry's AI Scientist Project.
  • WeatherNext: A model used to predict and analyze extreme weather events and optimize renewable energy grids to support sustainability goals.

AI Talent Development and Safety Collaboration

To build a sustainable AI ecosystem, the partnership includes initiatives to develop local talent and ensure the responsible deployment of AI.

Talent Cultivation

Google is expanding opportunities for Korean students to connect with Google DeepMind, including the exploration of internship opportunities. This follows a previous commitment where Google provided 50,000 AI Essentials scholarships to help job seekers acquire foundational AI skills.

Safety and Governance

In alignment with the Frontier AI Safety Commitments made at the AI Seoul Summit, Google DeepMind will collaborate with the Korean AI Safety Institute (AISI) to develop research and best practices for AI safety.

Strategic Context and Infrastructure

This partnership builds on the historical significance of the AlphaGo match in Seoul ten years prior and aligns with South Korea's position as a global leader in AI innovation density and AI adoption rates among the top 30 economies.

Google DeepMind's efforts will complement local infrastructure investments, such as the National AI for Science Center (NAIS), which is scheduled to open in May.
