Google DeepMind has launched a new partnership with Indian government bodies and local institutions as part of its National Partnerships for AI initiative. This collaboration aims to broaden access to frontier AI capabilities to meet national priorities in science, education, resilience, and public services.
Advancing Scientific Research via Frontier AI Models
Google DeepMind, Google Research, and Google.org are partnering with the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) to integrate AI models into scientific discovery. This initiative provides Indian researchers and engineers with access to specialized tools designed for complex biological and environmental analysis:
- AlphaGenome: An AI model used to analyze how mutations in human DNA sequences impact gene functions.
- AI Co-scientist: A multi-agent AI system designed to act as a virtual scientific collaborator.
- Earth AI: A suite of models based on Gemini's reasoning capabilities used for environmental monitoring and disaster response.
India is currently the fourth largest global adopter of AlphaFold, with over 180,000 researchers utilizing the system to predict protein, DNA, and RNA structures. To further this momentum, Google.org has announced the $30 million Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Science, an open call for researchers and nonprofits in India and globally to achieve scientific breakthroughs. Selected participants may enter a Google.org Accelerator for engineering support and infrastructure from Google DeepMind and Google Research.
AI Integration in Indian Education
Google is deploying AI-powered learning tools across India to enhance student comprehension and teacher workflows. Current initiatives include:
- Atal Tinkering Labs: Integration of Gemini into teacher workflows and the creation of a guardrailed AI assistant for students grounded in national curriculum standards to support robotics and coding.
- Interactive Textbooks: A partnership with PM Publishers Pvt. Ltd. to transform two million static K-12 textbooks across 250 titles and 2,000 schools into interactive digital journeys. Students can scan QR codes to access "Gems" (specialized Gemini models) that act as subject-matter experts.
- Linguistic Diversity: A $2 million founding contribution to the Indic Language Technologies Research Hub at IIT Bombay to ensure India's diverse languages are incorporated into global AI advancement.
Early data from a randomized control study by Fab AI at City Montessori School in Lucknow indicates that students are using Gemini for deeper learning; in nearly three out of four conversations, students sought to develop understanding rather than seeking quick answers.
Applications in Agriculture and Energy Security
Google is collaborating with Indian startups and government entities to apply AI to critical infrastructure and food security:
Agricultural Resilience
Using freely available Agri AI model APIs, organizations such as the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) and the startup TerraStack are enhancing crop productivity and farmer incomes. TerraStack specifically combines satellite, crop, and weather data to provide hyper-local insights for farmers.
Renewable Energy Forecasting
Google is working with Open Climate Fix to integrate WeatherNext AI models into India's electricity grid operations. In tests involving wind generation forecasts, the integration of WeatherNext showed up to an 8% improvement in forecast accuracy. This effort supports India's goal of installing 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030.
