Google DeepMind has announced a deepened partnership with the UK government aimed at accelerating the application of frontier AI to drive scientific discovery, modernize public services, and enhance national security. This collaboration establishes a blueprint for how AI innovation can be translated into public benefit through targeted access to specialized models and the creation of new research infrastructure.

Accelerating Scientific Discovery and Education

Google DeepMind is providing priority access to its "AI for Science" models to UK scientists to enhance research capacity and solve complex global challenges. This access includes specific tools designed for algorithmic design, genomic understanding, and environmental forecasting:

  • AlphaEvolve: A Gemini-powered coding agent for the design of advanced algorithms.
  • AlphaGenome: An AI model focused on improving the understanding of DNA.
  • AI co-scientist: A multi-agent AI system serving as a virtual scientific collaborator.
  • WeatherNext: A suite of state-of-the-art weather forecasting models.

To further this objective, Google DeepMind will establish its first automated science laboratory in the UK in 2026. This facility will focus on materials science research and be fully integrated with Gemini, utilizing robotics to synthesize and characterize hundreds of materials per day to accelerate the identification of transformative new materials, such as ambient-temperature superconductors and advanced batteries.

In the education sector, the partnership focuses on augmenting the classroom experience through learning science. A pilot program in Northern Ireland demonstrated that Gemini helped teachers save an average of 10 hours per week on administrative tasks and lesson planning. Additionally, a randomized controlled trial (RCT) by Eedi indicated that students receiving short, teacher-supervised AI tutoring sessions were 5.5 percentage points more likely to solve novel problems on subsequent topics compared to students working with human tutors alone.

Modernizing Public Services

Google DeepMind is working with government teams to provide the technical expertise and frontier models necessary to modernize public services. A primary example is the collaboration with the UK Government’s AI Incubator team (i.AI), which is trialling Extract, a Gemini-powered tool for council planners. Extract reduces the time required to convert a single planning document into digital data from up to two hours to just 40 seconds, significantly accelerating decision-making timelines.
