Google DeepMind expands presence in Singapore
Google DeepMind has announced the opening of a new research lab in Singapore. This expansion aims to accelerate the real-world application of AI and advance frontier research specifically tailored to the diverse linguistic and cultural needs of the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.
Strategic Expansion in the Asia-Pacific Region
Google DeepMind is establishing a new research lab in Singapore to leverage the country's forward-looking AI policies, specifically its National AI Strategy 2.0 and Smart Nation 2.0. This move follows a more than doubling of the Google DeepMind APAC team over the past year.
The new lab will employ research scientists, software engineers, and AI impact experts. Its primary objectives include:
- Advancing the core capabilities of Gemini.
- Pioneering foundational research in linguistic and cultural inclusivity for the APAC region.
- Applying latest AI models to Google products and Cloud customers.
- Collaborating with regional governments, businesses, civil society, and academic institutions.
Real-World AI Applications and Partnerships
Google DeepMind is utilizing its existing partnerships in Singapore and the wider region to demonstrate the impact of its AI technologies across several sectors:
Scientific Research
A multidisciplinary team from the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) and Singapore's Agency of Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) used AlphaFold to identify a link between immunology and neurodegenerative diseases, contributing to a better understanding of Parkinson's disease.
Public Services and Governance
In collaboration with the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA), and GovTech, Google launched an AI agent sandbox. This environment allows for the safe testing of autonomous solutions designed to improve public sector efficiency and service delivery.
Multilinguality and Cultural Context
Google DeepMind has partnered with AI Singapore to develop the following:
- Project Aquarium: An open data platform for Southeast Asian languages.
- SEA-LION: A family of Large Language Models (LLMs) tuned for Southeast Asian cultural and linguistic nuances. This partnership enabled the launch of SEA-LION v4, which is built on the multimodal capabilities of Gemma 3.
Education and Entrepreneurship
To broaden AI literacy, Google introduced the Gemini Academy to IMDA's Singapore Digital Office and provided Singaporean students with one year of free access to the Google AI Pro Plan. Additionally, the Google for Startups: AI First accelerator supports AI-first startups in Singapore addressing economic, societal, and environmental challenges.
Vision for Regional AI Development
Google DeepMind's expansion in Singapore is intended to ensure that AI benefits are realized across the Asia-Pacific region, which represents over half of the world's population. The new lab will focus on responsibly shaping AI to reflect the cultures and serve the needs of these diverse communities.
