OpenAI Expanding Stargate Infrastructure to Michigan

OpenAI has announced the development of a new Stargate campus in Saline Township, Michigan. This expansion increases the total planned capacity of the Stargate project to over 8 gigawatts and brings total investment to more than $450 billion over the next three years, keeping the company ahead of schedule to meet its January commitment of 10 gigawatts and $500 billion.

Stargate Michigan Campus Specifications

The Stargate Michigan campus is being developed by Related Digital, with construction scheduled to begin in early 2026. The project is part of a 4.5GW partnership with Oracle.

Employment and Labor

Construction of the site will create more than 2,500 union construction jobs.

Environmental and Energy Infrastructure

• Water Conservation: The campus will utilize a closed-loop cooling system designed to significantly reduce water consumption.
• Energy Supply: DTE Energy will provide power using existing excess transmission capacity to avoid impacting the local energy supply. Any necessary upgrades to the energy infrastructure will be funded by the project, ensuring that local ratepayers are not burdened with the costs.

National Stargate Infrastructure Strategy

The expansion into Michigan joins existing announced sites in Texas, New Mexico, Wisconsin, and Ohio. Together with capacity from six previously announced U.S. sites involving Oracle and SoftBank, the Stargate project aims to strengthen American supply chains and spur investment in modern energy and industrial systems.

OpenAI states that the infrastructure and manufacturing requirements for AI advancement provide an opportunity to reindustrialize the United States, ensuring that the benefits of AI—ranging from improved healthcare to public services—are distributed across various communities nationwide.
