OpenAI Announces The Stargate Project

OpenAI has announced The Stargate Project, a new company dedicated to investing $500 billion over the next four years to build AI infrastructure in the United States. This initiative is designed to secure American leadership in AI, support national security, and provide the compute capacity necessary to train leading models and achieve Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Infrastructure Investment and Economic Impact

The Stargate Project will invest a total of $500 billion over four years, with an initial deployment of $100 billion immediately. The project aims to create hundreds of thousands of American jobs and facilitate the re-industrialization of the United States, generating economic benefits globally.

Partnership Structure and Governance

Stargate is funded by initial equity funders including SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX. The governance structure is divided between financial and operational responsibilities:

  • Lead Partners: SoftBank and OpenAI.
  • Financial Responsibility: SoftBank.
  • Financial Responsibility: OpenAI.
  • Chairman: Masayoshi Son.

Technology Partners and Deployment

Key technology partners for the buildout include Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI. The construction of these AI campuses is already underway, beginning in Texas, and the organization is evaluating additional sites across the United States.

Strategic Collaborations

The computing system will be built and operated through a close collaboration between Oracle, NVIDIA, and OpenAI. This effort builds upon a long-term partnership between OpenAI and NVIDIA dating back to 2016, and a newer partnership with Oracle.

Despite the new infrastructure, OpenAI will continue to increase its consumption of Microsoft Azure to train models and deliver services.

Procurement and Partnership Opportunities

To support the buildout, The Stargate Project is seeking partnerships with firms across the data center infrastructure landscape, including those specializing in power, land, construction, and equipment.

As of January 31, 2025, the project has released a Request for Proposals (RFP) focused on land and power, and a Request for Qualification (RFQ) for architecture and engineering firms providing site design services.
