OpenAI Stargate: The Barn Data Center in Michigan

OpenAI has broken ground on "The Barn," a 1GW data center campus in Saline, Michigan. This project is part of the OpenAI Stargate program, a long-term initiative to build the infrastructure necessary to make advanced AI more reliable, useful, and accessible globally.

Infrastructure and Community Commitments

The Barn project is designed to protect local residents and resources through four primary commitments:

• Financial Protection for Ratepayers: The infrastructure and energy costs for the project will be paid for by the project itself; costs will not be passed on to local electricity ratepayers.
• Water Resource Preservation: The facility will utilize a closed-loop cooling system, which OpenAI states will use approximately the same amount of water as a typical office building.
• Job Creation: The project is expected to create over 2,500 union construction jobs, 450 permanent onsite jobs, 1,500 county-wide jobs, and 1,000 indirect jobs.
• Local Investment: OpenAI, in partnership with Related Digital, Oracle, Walbridge, and Blackstone, is contributing $10 million toward improvements to the Saline Recreation Center. Additionally, the project is projected to generate $1 billion in tax revenue over the lease term to support local, county, and state schools and services.

Educational and Workforce Initiatives

To ensure Michigan students and workers are equipped for the AI economy, OpenAI is implementing the following programs:

• Codex Credits for Students: OpenAI will provide up to $45 million in Codex credits to over 400,000 eligible Michigan college, community college, and trade school students (aged 18+) during the 2026–2027 academic year.
• AI Literacy Training: In partnership with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity and other local partners, OpenAI is developing AI literacy and workforce training focused on practical skills.
• Labor Partnerships: OpenAI is collaborating with North America–s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) to ensure that AI infrastructure construction supports union careers and registered apprenticeship programs.

Strategic Role of Compute and the Stargate Program

Compute capacity is a strategic advantage in AI development because it enables models to become better, cheaper, and more reliable over time. OpenAI is investing across the full stack–from systems and networking to physical infrastructure–to bring this capacity online at scale.

This project represents a transition in OpenAI's operational phase, moving from pure research and product development to the creation of the physical infrastructure required to support advanced AI. The Stargate program, launched in January 2025, aims to support American reindustrialization by leveraging Michigan's engineering talent and building culture to create broad economic benefits.
