OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank Expand Stargate AI Infrastructure
OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank have announced the addition of five new AI data center sites in the United States as part of the Stargate infrastructure platform. This expansion brings the total planned capacity of Stargate to nearly 7 gigawatts and represents over $400 billion in investment over the next three years, accelerating the path toward a 10-gigawatt, $500 billion commitment announced in January.
Infrastructure Capacity and Investment
Stargate is scaling rapidly toward its goal of 10 gigawatts of capacity and $500 billion in total investment. The current expansion includes five new sites, which, combined with the flagship site in Abilene, Texas, and ongoing projects with CoreWeave, now total nearly 7 gigawatts of planned capacity.
Oracle Partnership and Site Development
OpenAI and Oracle have entered into a partnership exceeding $300 billion over the next five years to develop up to 4.5 gigawatts of additional Stargate capacity. This collaboration includes the following sites:
- Shackelford County, Texas: New data center site.
- Doña Ana County, New Mexico: New data center site.
- Wisconsin: A site in the Midwest developed by Oracle in partnership with Vantage.
- Abilene, Texas: A potential 600 megawatt expansion near the flagship site.
Together, these Oracle-developed sites can deliver over 5.5 gigawatts of capacity and are expected to create over 25,000 onsite jobs and tens of thousands of additional jobs across the U.S.
SoftBank Partnership and Scalability
Two additional sites are being developed through a partnership between SoftBank and OpenAI, designed to scale to 1.5 gigawatts over the next 18 months. These sites focus on faster deployment and cost efficiency:
- Lordstown, Ohio: SoftBank has broken ground on an advanced data center design, expected to be operational next year.
- Milam County, Texas: Developed in partnership with SB Energy (a SoftBank Group company) to provide powered infrastructure for a fast-build site.
Site Selection and Operational Status
The five new sites were selected from over 300 proposals across more than 30 states. The new Oracle sites will integrate with the flagship Stargate campus in Abilene, Texas, which is currently operational on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
Oracle began delivering NVIDIA GB200 racks in June, and OpenAI has already initiated early training and inference workloads on this capacity to advance next-generation research.
