OpenAI and Oracle Partner to Expand Stargate AI Infrastructure by 4.5 GW
OpenAI and Oracle have entered an agreement to develop 4.5 gigawatts (GW) of additional Stargate data center capacity within the United States. This expansion is designed to accelerate U.S. AI leadership and reindustrialization while providing the massive compute power required for next-generation frontier research.
Infrastructure Expansion and Capacity Goals
OpenAI is expanding its AI infrastructure platform, Stargate, through a partnership with Oracle. The addition of 4.5 GW of capacity will bring OpenAI's total under-development Stargate AI data center capacity to over 5 GW, which will support over 2 million chips.
This progress marks a significant step toward a commitment made at the White House in January to invest $500 billion into 10 GW of AI infrastructure in the U.S. over the next four years. OpenAI expects to exceed this initial commitment due to momentum with partners including Oracle and SoftBank.
Stargate I and Current Operational Status
Construction of the Stargate I site in Abilene, Texas, is currently progressing, with portions of the facility now operational. Key milestones for the site include:
- Hardware Deployment: Oracle began delivering Nvidia GB200 racks last month.
- Workload Execution: OpenAI has begun running early training and inference workloads to advance frontier research.
- Employment: The site has already created thousands of jobs, including specialized roles for technicians, equipment operators, and electricians from over 20 states.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
OpenAI estimates that the development and operation of the additional 4.5 GW of capacity announced in the partnership with Oracle will create over 100,000 jobs in the U.S. These roles encompass:
- Direct Roles: Full-time positions required to operate the data centers.
- Short-term Roles: Specialized construction roles, such as electricians.
- Indirect Roles: Manufacturing and local service positions.
The Stargate Platform Ecosystem
Stargate is OpenAI's overarching AI infrastructure platform. It encompasses partnerships with Oracle, SoftBank, and CoreWeave, as well as international investments in U.S. infrastructure through the "OpenAI for Countries" initiative. Microsoft continues to provide cloud services for OpenAI, including through the Stargate platform.
Additionally, OpenAI is collaborating with with SoftBank on site assessments and the redesign of data center architecture to better power advanced AI, aiming to increase the reliability and capability of AI tools.
Strategic Importance
OpenAI describes Stargate as an ambitious undertaking supported by the White House and global investors. The project is intended to drive innovation, economic growth, and national competitiveness by securing the critical AI infrastructure necessary to meet the expanding compute needs of the frontier AI models.
