OpenAI Learning Accelerator India Launch

OpenAI has launched the OpenAI Learning Accelerator, an India-first initiative designed to integrate advanced AI into the national education system through research, training, and large-scale deployment. This initiative aims to ensure AI strengthens critical thinking and learning outcomes rather than serving as a shortcut for students.

Institutional Partnerships and AI Research

OpenAI is collaborating with leading Indian institutions to study the intersection of AI and pedagogy. A primary component of this effort is a research collaboration with IIT Madras, supported by $500,000 in funding from OpenAI. This partnership focuses on long-term studies to improve learning outcomes and develop innovative teaching methods grounded in cognitive neuroscience, with the resulting findings to be shared openly to inform future product development.

Large-Scale AI Access and Deployment

OpenAI plans to distribute approximately 500,000 ChatGPT licenses and accompanying training over the next six months through three primary channels:

  • Ministry of Education (MoE): Providing ChatGPT access to teachers in government schools (Classes 1–12) to assist with lesson planning and student engagement.
  • All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE): Granting access to technical institutes nationwide to improve employability and digital skills.
  • ARISE member schools: Providing access for K–12 educators to enable personalized teaching.

Educational Tools and AI Literacy

To ensure the responsible use of technology, OpenAI and its partners are designing training programs to build AI literacy among students and educators. A key tool being deployed at scale is ChatGPT—specifically "study mode," which acts as a personalized tutor by using interactive questioning and structured instruction to guide students step-by-step toward a deeper understanding of the material.

Strategic Leadership and Regional Expansion

OpenAI has appointed Raghav Gupta, formerly the Managing Director for India and Asia Pacific at Coursera, as the Head of Education for India and Asia Pacific. This leadership role is intended to make OpenAI’s tools more accessible to researchers, students, and educators across the region.

This initiative is part of a broader expansion in India, which includes:

  • Physical Presence: The opening of a first India office in New Delhi later in 2025.
  • Localized Pricing: The introduction of ChatGPT Go, a subscription tier priced at –‘399/month with integrated UPI payments.
  • Language Capabilities: Enhanced Indic language support provided by the GPT-5 model.
  • AI Literacy: The expansion of the OpenAI Academy in partnership with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
