OpenAI for India Initiative
OpenAI has launched "OpenAI for India," a nationwide initiative designed to expand AI access and unlock economic and societal benefits across India. This initiative focuses on building sovereign AI infrastructure, driving enterprise transformation, and investing in workforce upskilling through strategic partnerships with the Tata Group and other leading Indian organizations.
Sovereign AI Infrastructure and Data Residency
OpenAI and the Tata Group are partnering to develop local, AI-ready data center capacity to ensure data residency, security, and compliance for mission-critical and government workloads. As part of OpenAI's global Stargate initiative, OpenAI will be the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services' (TCS) HyperVault data center business.
- Capacity: The partnership begins with 100 megawatts of capacity, with the potential to scale to 1 gigawatt over time.
- Objective: This infrastructure allows OpenAI's advanced models to run securely within India, reducing latency and meeting domestic security requirements.
Enterprise AI Transformation and Adoption
OpenAI is accelerating AI-native transformation through a strategic collaboration with the Tata Group. This includes one of the world's largest enterprise AI deployments, where Tata Group plans to deploy ChatGPT Enterprise to its employees, starting with hundreds of thousands of TCS employees.
Additionally, TCS intends to use OpenAI's Codex to standardize AI-native software development across its teams. This effort builds on existing partnerships with other Indian companies including JioHotstar, Eternal, Pine Labs, Cars24, HCLTech, PhonePe, CRED, and MakeMyTrip.
Education and Workforce Upskilling
OpenAI is expanding its certification and educational programs to India to prepare the workforce for the AI era.
- OpenAI Certifications: TCS is the first organization outside the United States to participate in OpenAI Certifications, helping professionals build practical AI skills.
- ChatGPT Edu Licenses: OpenAI is providing over 100,000 ChatGPT Edu licenses to students at several leading institutions, including:
- Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad
- All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi
- Manipal Academy of Higher Education
- University of Petroleum and Energy Studies
- Pearl Academy
Local Presence and Strategic Vision
To support its users—which currently include more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users in India—OpenAI is expanding its physical presence. The company plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, complementing its existing office in New Delhi.
"India is already leading the way in AI adoption, and with its homegrown tech talent, optimism about what AI can do for the country, and strong government support, it is well placed to help shape its future and how democratic AI is adopted at scale."
