OpenAI Certifications: AI Foundations and ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers
OpenAI has introduced its first certification courses, AI Foundations and ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers, to provide workers and educators with practical, job-ready AI skills. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to certify 10 million Americans by 2030 and connect skill development with economic opportunity through an upcoming OpenAI Jobs Platform.
AI Foundations: Integrated Learning and Certification
AI Foundations is a course designed to provide core, practical AI skills applicable across various roles and industries. The course is uniquely delivered directly within ChatGPT, allowing learners to practice tasks, receive in-context feedback, and reflect on their work within a single environment where ChatGPT serves as the tutor and practice space.
Upon completion of AI Foundations, learners earn a certification verifying their job-ready AI skills. This serves as a stepping stone toward a full OpenAI Certification, a more comprehensive credential that requires additional courses and a hands-on project to demonstrate skills in real-world settings.
Implementation and Partners
AI Foundations is currently launching via pilot programs with several public-sector and employer partners, including:
- Corporate Partners: Walmart, John Deere, Lowe’s, Boston Consulting Group, and Accenture.
- Public Sector: The Office of the Governor of Delaware and Choose New Jersey.
- Other Partners: Hearst, Russell Reynolds Associates, Upwork, and Elevance Health.
To ensure educational rigor, OpenAI is collaborating with Coursera, ETS, and Credly by Pearson for learning design and psychometric rigor. Additionally, college students in the ChatGPT Lab and participants at Arizona State University and the California State University system are receiving early access or piloting certifications to create employment pathways for students.
ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers: AI in the Classroom
ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers is a a course built specifically for K-12 educators. It is currently available on Coursera and focuses on the essentials of how ChatGPT works, how to navigate and personalize the tool, and how to apply it to administrative and classroom tasks.
OpenAI intends to bring this experience directly into ChatGPT and ChatGPT for Teachers in early 2026 to provide a hands-on learning environment similar to AI Foundations. Further teacher-focused certifications will follow.
Educator Support Ecosystem
This course is part of a larger effort to support educators, which includes: n* ChatGPT for Teachers: Providing a custom version of ChatGPT free to educators.
- American Federation of Teachers Partnership: An initiative to equip 400,000 K-12 educators with practical AI skills.
- Academic Tools: The introduction of tools like study mode to meet academic needs.
Economic Opportunity and the OpenAI Jobs Platform
OpenAI's certification programs are designed to bridge the gap between skill acquisition and employment. The organization is collaborating with Indeed and Upwork to ensure that technical expertise translates into economic possibilities. These efforts lay the foundation for the upcoming OpenAI Jobs Platform, which aimed at making it easier for businesses to hire workers with specific, verified AI skills.
