Google DeepMind has launched ATL Saathi, a Gemini-powered web application that serves as a 24/7 planning and training assistant for educators within India's Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL). This initiative shifts the focus of the ATL program from providing physical infrastructure—such as 3D printing, IoT, and robotics—to driving meaningful educational outcomes through AI-augmented mentorship.

AI-Powered Teacher Support and Curriculum Integration

ATL Saathi is developed in collaboration with the Atal Innovation Mission (part of NITI Aayog), ensuring the tool is grounded in the educational principles and pedagogy of the Government of India's flagship initiative to cultivate one million "Neoteric Innovators."

Streamlined Content Curation via NotebookLM

To reduce the administrative burden on teachers, ATL Saathi organizes all training modules and curriculum materials within NotebookLM. This enables a micro-learning approach that replaces lengthy videos with:

  • Summarized modules
  • AI-generated infographics
  • Video overviews
  • Interactive quizzes for 12 core modules of the ATL prescribed curriculum

Advanced Project Generation

For 10 core modules, the application provides an advanced project generation interface that supports two distinct teaching mechanisms:

  • Push Mentorship: Teachers can instantly generate grade-appropriate project suggestions aligned with the curriculum to inspire student curiosity.
  • Pull Mentorship: When students present their own problem statements, the AI provides educators with step-by-step assembly instructions, wiring diagrams, and necessary safety precautions to implement those ideas safely.

Multilingual Accessibility

To accommodate the linguistic diversity of Indian classrooms, ATL Saathi allows educators to interact with the assistant in their preferred language. The tool currently supports eight languages, with the capability to support more in the future.

Technical Foundation: Gemini 3.5 Flash

ATL Saathi is powered by the Gemini model family, specifically utilizing the Gemini 3.5 Flash model to generate instructional materials and project guidance. The model's intelligence is used to create concise content, including AI infographics and interactive quizzes, and to produce the detailed technical instructions and safety precautions required for student-led projects.

Implementation and Goals

Google DeepMind is rolling out ATL Saathi to an initial pilot cohort of 100 schools across India. The primary goals of this deployment are to reduce administrative overhead for teachers, increase their efficiency, and enhance their comfort level in guiding students through tinkering and innovation.
