Anthropic Opens Sydney Office and Appoints Theo Hourmouzis as GM for Australia and New Zealand

Anthropic has officially opened its Sydney office and appointed Theo Hourmouzis as General Manager for Australia and New Zealand. This expansion marks a strategic investment in the Asia-Pacific region, aimed at helping enterprises and government organizations integrate Claude into their core operations with a focus on safety and responsibility.

Regional Leadership and Strategy

Theo Hourmouzis joins Anthropic as the General Manager for Australia and New Zealand, bringing over 20 years of technology leadership experience across the Asia-Pacific region. Previously, Hourmouzis served as Senior Vice President for Australia, New Zealand, and ASEAN at Snowflake, where he worked with financial services, retail, aviation, and government sectors to transition AI from experimentation to business impact.

At Anthropic, Hourmouzis will lead the local team and develop a strategy to integrate Claude into the critical workflows of Australian and New Zealand customers. He emphasizes a disciplined approach to AI adoption, stating:

"Organizations across Australia and New Zealand are thinking carefully about how to adopt AI, and they want partners who take safety and rigor as seriously as they take the opportunity... the organizations that do best with AI will be the ones that pair ambition with discipline."

Enterprise and Research Partnerships

Anthropic is deepening its relationships with a variety of sector-specific partners in the region, including:

  • Enterprise Partners: Commonwealth Bank and Quantium.
  • AI for Science Research Partners: Australian National University, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Garvan Institute of Medical Research, and Curtin University.

This expansion also supports the commitments outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) recently signed between Anthropic and the Australian government, reflecting a shared conviction that responsible AI development can drive economic growth.

Local Platform Collaborations

Anthropic has announced deep platform collaborations with several prominent local organizations:

Canva and Xero

Anthropic is partnering with Canva and Xero to integrate AI capabilities across their platforms:

  • Canva: The Canva Design Engine and Visual Suite will be integrated into the newly launched Claude Design by Anthropic Labs.
  • Xero: A multi-year partnership will bring Claude's AI directly into Xero, while Xero's financial data and tools will be integrated into Claude.ai.

YMCA South Australia

As a "Claude for Nonprofits" partner, YMCA South Australia—which operates 65+ community locations with approximately 1,250 staff—is using Claude to:

  • Convert complex operational data into actionable insights.
  • Reduce branded content production time from hours to minutes.
  • In-house Technical Work: Bring technical tasks in-house that previously required external contractors.

Devan Seamans, Head of Marketing & Technology at YMCA South Australia, notes that the platform's enterprise governance and controls are essential for the obligations of a large not-for-profit organization.

Global Expansion Context

The opening of the Sydney office follows recent expansions into Tokyo, Bengaluru, and Seoul, placing Anthropic closer to its growing international customer base.
