Google DeepMind Gemini AI Pilot in Northern Ireland Schools

Google DeepMind and the Northern Ireland Education Authority’s C2k program conducted a six-month pilot program where 100 teachers integrated Gemini and Google Workspace tools into their classrooms. The initiative demonstrated that AI can significantly reduce administrative burdens and enable personalized learning when grounded in learning science principles.

Time Savings and Administrative Efficiency

Participating teachers reported saving an average of 10 hours per week using Gemini. This time recovery allowed educators to reinvest their efforts into student engagement and their own professional development.

During the pilot, teachers identified over 600 unique use cases for Gemini, which included:

  • Drafting correspondence to parents.
  • Creating risk assessments for class outings.
  • Creating podcasts from curriculum material using NotebookLM for exam preparation.
  • Streamlining general administrative tasks andn brainstorming engaging content.

Personalization and Inclusive Learning

Gemini was utilized to remove learning barriers and create more inclusive environments through specific pedagogical applications:

  • Neurodiversity Support: Teachers used NotebookLM’s MindMap feature to create interactive visual representations of source material, helping neurodivergent students grasp the "big picture" rather than focusing solely on details.
  • Customized Lesson Planning: Educators used Gemini to tailor lessons to meet the specific needs of individual students.
  • Language and Creativity: The tools were used to generate images to spark curiosity in creative writing classes and to create lessons in the Irish language.

Implementation and Responsible AI Deployment

The success of the pilot was attributed to a collaborative ecosystem where teachers shared learnings with each other. Damian Harvey, Interim Head of C2k, emphasized that the pilot's acceleration was driven by this peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and the availability of resources for AI readiness training.

Google DeepMind maintains that AI is a collaborative tool intended to empower educators rather than replace them, asserting that teachers must maintain ownership over how AI is used to facilitate student learning. Following the results of this pilot, C2k plans to roll out Gemini training to a larger number of teachers across Northern Ireland.
