Google DeepMind and U.S. Department of Energy Partner for Genesis Mission

Google DeepMind has announced a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support the White House's Genesis Mission. This national effort aims to transform scientific research and accelerate breakthroughs in energy, scientific discovery, and national security by mobilizing the DOE's 17 National Laboratories, industry, and academia to build an integrated discovery platform.

AI Tools for National Laboratories

Google DeepMind is implementing an accelerated access program providing scientists at all 17 DOE National Laboratories with frontier AI for Science models and agentic tools.

AI Co-Scientist

Starting immediately, researchers have access to the AI co-scientist on Google Cloud. This multi-agent virtual scientific collaborator, built on Gemini and trained on Google's TPUs, is designed to synthesize vast amounts of information to generate novel hypotheses and research proposals.

In biomedical applications, AI co-scientist has already demonstrated the following capabilities:

  • Drug Repurposing: It proposed novel drug repurposing candidates for liver fibrosis that were validated through laboratory experiments.
  • Antimicrobial Resistance: It predicted complex antimicrobial resistance mechanisms that matched experimental results before publication.

Upcoming 2026 Tool Expansion

In early 2026, the accelerated access program will expand to include:

  • AlphaEvolve: A Gemini-powered coding agent for designing advanced algorithms. It has already improved efficiency in Google's data centers, chip design, and AI training processes.
  • AlphaGenome: An AI model focused on the non-coding part of DNA to speed up research on genome biology and disease understanding. It may be extended to plant genomes for crop resistance and sustainable biofuels.
  • WeatherNext: A family of state-of-the-art weather forecasting models. This technology is already used by the U.S. National Hurricane Center for cyclone forecasts and warnings.

Gemini for Government

DOE and National Laboratories can also utilize Gemini for Government, which integrates Google's AI-optimized accredited commercial cloud with Gemini models, including Gemini 3, which provides state-of-the-art reasoning and multimodal understanding.

Historical Context and Future Research

Google DeepMind's collaboration with the DOE is not new. The Protein Data Bank, developed by the DOE's Brookhaven National Laboratory, was foundational to the development of AlphaFold, the AI system for protein structure prediction that contributed to the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Looking forward, the Genesis Mission will explore research collaborations with National Laboratories in the following areas:

  • Fusion Energy: Applying AI to next-generation fusion energy research.
  • New Materials Discovery: Utilizing deep learning for the discovery of new materials.
  • Earth Science: Mapping the planet in unprecedented detail.

By combining human ingenuity with advanced AI capabilities, the partnership aims to address global challenges in energy, disease, and security.
