Anthropic has announced the opening of a new office in Sydney, Australia, to better serve the AI ecosystems of Australia and New Zealand (ANZ). This expansion marks Anthropic's fourth office in the Asia-Pacific region, joining Tokyo, Bengaluru, and Seoul.

Strategic Expansion into Australia and New Zealand

Anthropic is establishing a local presence in Sydney to address strong demand from businesses in the ANZ region. The goal is to ensure that the Claude AI model is developed with respect for the region's unique goals, opportunities, and challenges.

According to Chris Ciauri, Managing Director of International, Anthropic is focusing on sectors of national importance, including:

  • Financial services
  • Agricultural technology (AgTech)
  • Clean energy innovation
  • Healthcare delivery
  • Deep tech and scientific research
  • Enterprise AI transformation

Market Adoption and Usage Trends

Australia and New Zealand exhibit high adoption rates for Claude.ai. Relative to population, Australia ranks 4th globally and New Zealand ranks 8th globally in usage, according to Anthropic's Economic Index. Usage trends in these countries show a strong preference for Claude for research, educational instruction, and computer and coding tasks.

Infrastructure and Data Residency

Anthropic is exploring opportunities to expand compute capacity within Australia to meet the needs of enterprises and government agencies with strict data residency requirements.

Currently, the company is pursuing two paths for infrastructure expansion:

  1. Immediate Capacity: Exploring the addition of local capacity through third-party partners using existing infrastructure.
  2. Long-term Strategy: Engaging in early conversations regarding longer-term infrastructure investments in the region.

Partnerships and Local Engagement

Anthropic intends to deepen engagement with Australian institutions and collaborate on projects that advance Australia's national interests. To formalize these partnerships and meet with customers and policymakers, Anthropic's executive team will visit Australia at the end of March.

Anthropic already works with several innovative organizations in the region, including Canva, Quantium, and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, as well as startups in climate tech, physical AI, and AgTech.
