Anthropic is expanding its global operations to India, with plans to open an office in Bengaluru in early 2026. This move is designed to serve India's rapidly growing AI ecosystem and meet the increasing international demand for Claude.

Strategic Expansion into Bengaluru

Anthropic will establish Bengaluru as its second office in the Asia Pacific region, following the upcoming opening of an office in Tokyo. This expansion is driven by the scale of India's technical talent and the Indian government's commitment to ensuring AI benefits are distributed across all areas of society.

CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei stated:

"India is compelling because of the scale of its technical talent and the commitment from the Indian government to ensure the benefits of artificial intelligence reach all areas of society, not just concentrated pockets."

Market Demand and Usage Patterns in India

India currently ranks second globally in consumer usage of Claude, trailing only the United States. A significant portion of Claude's usage in India is concentrated in technical and programming tasks, including web app debugging and mobile UI development.

Key adoption drivers include:

  • Enterprise Adoption: Large Indian enterprises, such as CRED, utilize Claude for critical coding work.
  • IT Services Growth: Anthropic anticipates that Claude Code, which saw 10x usage growth in the first three months following its May launch, will accelerate growth within India's export-focused IT services industry.
  • Reliability Requirements: Chief Commercial Officer Paul Smith noted that Indian enterprises and startups require AI models that combine frontier performance with the safety and reliability necessary for massive-scale business operations.

Anthropic's operations in India will focus on deploying AI for social impact in three primary sectors:

Advancing Indic Language Capabilities
