Anthropic Donates Model Context Protocol to the Agentic AI Foundation

Anthropic has donated the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), a directed fund under the Linux Foundation. This move transitions MCP from a company-led project to a vendor-neutral open standard designed to connect AI applications to external systems.

MCP serves as a universal open standard for integrating AI applications with external data sources and tools. Since its introduction one year ago, the protocol has seen widespread adoption across platforms, infrastructure, and the developer community:

  • Platform Adoption: MCP is integrated into major AI products including ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Cursor, and Visual Studio Code.
  • Infrastructure Support: Enterprise-grade deployment support is provided by AWS, Cloudflare, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.
  • Community Growth: There are over 10,000 active public MCP servers and more than 97 million monthly SDK downloads across Python and TypeScript.

Recent updates to MCP have expanded its capabilities for production-scale deployments:

  • Spec Update: The November 25th specification release introduced server identity, statelessness, asynchronous operations, and official extensions.
  • Discovery: An official community-driven Registry now exists for discovering available MCP servers.
  • Claude Integration: Claude now features a directory of over 75 connectors powered by MCP. Additionally, Anthropic has launched Tool Search and Programmatic Tool Calling in its API to reduce latency and efficiently manage thousands of tools in complex agent workflows.

The Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF)

The Agentic AI Foundation is a directed fund hosted by the Linux Foundation, established to ensure that agentic AI develops transparently and in the public interest.

Founding Partners and Governance

The AAIF was co-founded by Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI, with additional support from Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Cloudflare, and Bloomberg. By housing MCP under the AAIF, the protocol joins other founding projects such as OpenAI's AGENTS.md and Block's goose.

Role of the Linux Foundation

The Linux Foundation provides neutral stewardship and shared infrastructure, leveraging its experience with critical open-source projects like Kubernetes, Node.js, PyTorch, and the Linux Kernel to maintain vendor neutrality for the AAIF and its projects.

Implications for MCP Governance

Despite the transfer to the Linux Foundation, the governance model for the Model Context Protocol remains unchanged. Project maintainers will continue to operate with a focus on transparent decision-making and the prioritization of community input.
