OpenAI Stargate Initiative: Samsung and SK Partnerships for AI Infrastructure

OpenAI, Samsung, and SK have entered into strategic partnerships under the Stargate initiative to expand the global AI infrastructure required for next-generation AI development, with a specific focus on Korea. This collaboration aims to increase the supply of advanced memory chips and expand data center capacity to support the scaling of advanced AI models.

Advanced Memory Chip Production

Samsung Electronics and SK hynix will scale up the production of advanced memory chips essential for powering OpenAI's models. The partnership targets an accelerated capacity rollout of 900,000 DRAM wafer starts per month to ensure a steady supply of high-performance memory critical for AI computing.

Expansion of AI Data Center Capacity in Korea

OpenAI is exploring the development of next-generation AI data centers in Korea through several agreements:

  • Government Collaboration: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) to evaluate building AI data centers outside the Seoul Metropolitan Area to promote regional economic growth and job creation.
  • SK Telecom Partnership: A separate partnership with SK Telecom to explore the construction of AI data centers in Korea.
  • Samsung Group Entities: Agreements with Samsung C&T, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Samsung SDS to assess opportunities for additional data center capacity.

Operational Integration of OpenAI Technology

Samsung and SK will integrate ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI API capabilities into their own internal operations to optimize workflows and drive innovation.

Strategic Significance

The initiative is designed to support Korea's goal of becoming a top-three global AI nation by leveraging the country's technical talent and infrastructure.
