OpenAI Introduces Stargate UK for Sovereign AI Infrastructure
OpenAI has announced Stargate UK, an AI infrastructure partnership with NVIDIA and Nscale designed to strengthen the United Kingdom's sovereign compute capabilities. This initiative ensures that OpenAI's models can run on local computing power within the UK, specifically targeting specialist use cases where jurisdiction and data residency are critical.
Sovereign Compute and Infrastructure
Stargate UK provides the UK with the capacity to run AI models on local hardware, supporting the national AI Opportunities Action Plan and enhancing global competitiveness. This project is part of the "OpenAI for Countries" program, which supports governments in building sovereign AI capabilities.
Hardware and Scaling
OpenAI will explore the offtake of up to 8,000 GPUs in Q1 2026, with the potential to scale to 31,000 GPUs over time. The infrastructure will be deployed across multiple sites, including Cobalt Park in the North East, which is part of a newly designated AI Growth Zone.
Technical Partnerships
- NVIDIA: Provides access to the latest generation of AI hardware. The project utilizes NVIDIA's Grace Blackwell series of chips, which incorporate semiconductor designs from the British company Arm.
- Nscale: Will significantly expand its planned UK capacity to support the Stargate UK project.
Targeted Use Cases for Local Compute
Local computing power is provided to ensure that OpenAI's models can be utilized in regulated industries and critical sectors where jurisdiction matters. Key target areas include:
- Critical public services
- Regulated industries such as finance
- Research projects
- National security partnerships
Workforce Development and AI Literacy
To accompany the hardware rollout, OpenAI is bringing the OpenAI Academy to the UK. This AI literacy hub is designed to help the UK government achieve its goal of upskilling 7.5 million workers by 2030. OpenAI will collaborate with local business leaders to create flexible, customizable learning experiences to prevent regional gaps in AI adoption and support job creation.
UK Market Adoption
The UK is currently one of the top five global markets for OpenAI paid subscribers and API developers. The initiative builds on existing adoption by British enterprises and institutions, including NatWest, Virgin Atlantic, Synthesia, and Oxford University.
"The UK has been a longstanding pioneer of AI, and is now home to world-class researchers, millions of ChatGPT users, and a government that quickly recognized the potential of this technology. Stargate UK builds on this foundation to help accelerate scientific breakthroughs, improve productivity, and drive economic growth."
