OpenAI and Foxconn Collaborate to Strengthen U.S. AI Infrastructure Manufacturing

OpenAI and Foxconn (Hon Hai Technology Group) have entered into a collaboration to co-design and manufacture next-generation AI infrastructure hardware within the United States. This partnership aims to strengthen domestic supply chains and accelerate the deployment of advanced AI systems by aligning hardware design with the emerging needs of frontier AI models.

Co-Designing Next-Generation AI Data Center Hardware

OpenAI will provide insights into emerging hardware requirements across the AI industry to inform Foxconn's design and development efforts. The collaboration focuses on the parallel development of multiple generations of AI data center racks to ensure that infrastructure keeps pace with the rapidly advancing needs of AI models. By integrating OpenAI's infrastructure roadmap with Foxconn's engineering expertise, the companies intend to bring new systems online faster and secure capacity for long-term growth.

Strengthening the U.S. AI Supply Chain

The partnership seeks to improve rack architecture to enable manufacturing across the U.S., broaden sourcing to include more domestic suppliers and a wider variety of chipsets, and expand localized testing and assembly. These efforts are intended to increase reliability, speed up deployment, and strengthen the overall ecosystem to create a more resilient and scalable American supply chain.

Domestic Production of Critical AI Components

Foxconn will manufacture key AI data center equipment in the U.S., including:

  • Cabling
  • Networking
  • Power systems
  • Cooling systems

This domestic production is intended to support the rapid construction of high-performance compute infrastructure and and ensure economic benefits reach U.S. workers and manufacturers.

Partnership Terms and Strategic Goals

While the initial agreement does not include purchase commitments or financial obligations, OpenAI retains early access to evaluate these systems and holds an option to purchase them.

Strategically, the partnership is framed as an effort to ensure that the core technologies of the AI era are built in the U.S. to maintain American leadership in AI. As Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, stated:
