OpenAI Initiative to Strengthen U.S. AI Supply Chain via Domestic Manufacturing
OpenAI has launched a Request for Proposals (RFP) to identify and enable U.S.-based manufacturing for critical AI infrastructure components. This initiative aims to shorten supply chain timelines, increase resilience, and maintain U.S. technology leadership as AI infrastructure scales.
Domestic Manufacturing RFP Scope
OpenAI is seeking proposals from U.S.-based manufacturers, suppliers, and partners capable of producing critical components and systems for the AI ecosystem. The RFP focuses on three primary categories of hardware:
- Consumer Electronics: Final assembly, tooling, equipment, and modules.
- Data Center Hardware: Manufacturing for compute, power, cooling, and supporting infrastructure.
- Advanced Robotics: Critical inputs such as power electronics, motors, and gearboxes.
Expanding the AI Infrastructure Definition
OpenAI asserts that AI infrastructure extends beyond semiconductors and data centers. To bring AI online at scale, a comprehensive ecosystem of physical components is required, including:
- Power and cooling systems
- Networking gear and cabling
- Networking racks
- Power electronics and electromechanical modules
- Testing and assembly capacity
Strategic Goals and Economic Impact
The goal of this RFP is to use targeted partnerships and demand signals to unlock faster growth and larger scale for domestic production. OpenAI states that these investments are intended to catalyze U.S. manufacturing, modernize the energy grid, and create well-paid jobs.
This effort builds upon OpenAI's "Stargate" initiative, launched nearly one year prior to the announcement, which has already reached over halfway to meeting a 10-gigawatt capacity commitment.
Submission Timeline
OpenAI will review proposals on a rolling basis. The deadline for submission is June 2026.
