OpenAI and Broadcom Strategic Collaboration for AI Accelerators

OpenAI and Broadcom have announced a strategic collaboration to deploy 10 gigawatts of custom AI accelerators. This partnership aims to integrate OpenAI's frontier model insights directly into hardware design to unlock higher levels of intelligence and meet the surging global demand for AI infrastructure.

Custom Hardware Design for Frontier AI

OpenAI is designing its own AI accelerators and systems to embed learnings from the development of frontier models and products directly into the hardware. This vertical integration allows OpenAI to optimize the hardware for the specific requirements of its models, which is intended to unlock new levels of capability and intelligence.

Infrastructure Deployment and Timeline

Broadcom will partner with OpenAI to develop and deploy racks of AI accelerator and network systems. The deployment schedule is as follows:

  • Start Date: Second half of 2026
  • Completion Date: End of 2029

These systems will be deployed across OpenAI's own facilities and partner data centers.

Networking and Scale-up/Scale-out Solutions

The infrastructure will be scaled using Broadcom's end-to-end portfolio of Ethernet, PCIe, and optical connectivity solutions. Broadcom's networking solutions are used for both scale-up and scale-out networking in AI data centers, emphasizing the choice of standards-based Ethernet as the primary technology for cost and performance optimization.

Strategic Goals and Executive Perspectives

The collaboration is designed to build the capacity required to push the frontier of AI toward artificial general intelligence (AGI).
