OpenAI Leadership Expansion: Fidji Simo Appointed CEO of Applications
OpenAI has appointed Fidji Simo as CEO of Applications to lead the business and operational teams responsible for delivering AI research to global users. This leadership expansion allows CEO Sam Altman to increase his focus on Research, Compute, and Safety Systems as the organization scales its infrastructure and product offerings.
New Leadership Structure for Applications
Fidji Simo joins OpenAI as the CEO of Applications, reporting directly to Sam Altman. In this role, she will lead the group of existing business and operational teams that manage how OpenAI's research is deployed and utilized worldwide. Her primary objective is to enable "traditional" company functions to scale during the company's next phase of growth.
Simo, who has served as an OpenAI board member for the past year, will transition from her current role at Instacart over the coming months and is expected to join OpenAI later this year.
Strategic Focus of the CEO
Sam Altman remains the CEO of OpenAI and continues to oversee all three primary pillars of the organization: Research, Compute, and Applications. This structural change allows Altman to shift more of his direct attention toward specific technical and safety priorities:
- Research, Compute, and Safety Systems: These areas will continue to report directly to Sam Altman to ensure the development of superintelligence is handled safely and with the necessary infrastructure.
- Non-Profit Operations: Altman will work closely with the board to maximize the positive impact of OpenAI's non-profit arm.
OpenAI's Organizational Evolution
OpenAI describes its current trajectory as evolving beyond its origins as a research lab into three distinct operational identities:
- Global Product Company: Serving hundreds of millions of users worldwide.
- Infrastructure Company: Building the systems required to advance research and deliver AI tools at an unprecedented scale.
- Non-Profit Organization: Operating one of the largest non-profits to ensure AGI benefits everyone.
By bringing in specialized leadership for the Applications pillar, OpenAI aims to maintain alignment and integration across these three massive efforts while scaling rapidly.
