OpenAI Board of Directors Expansion

OpenAI has expanded its Board of Directors by appointing three new members—Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman, and Fidji Simo—and reinstating CEO Sam Altman to the board. This expansion is intended to provide the board with broader leadership experience in global organization management and regulatory navigation.

Board Appointments and Leadership

OpenAI's new board members bring a diverse range of expertise in technology, nonprofit leadership, and corporate governance. They will work alongside existing board members Adam D’Angelo, Larry Summers, and Bret Taylor.

Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann

Dr. Desmond-Hellmann is a physician and nonprofit leader with extensive experience in health and science policy. Her background includes:

  • Leadership Roles: Former CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (2014†2020) and former Professor and Chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
  • Board Experience: Current member of the boards of Pfizer and the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
  • Previous Experience: Former Director at Meta (Facebook), Proctor and Gamble, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute, as well as President of Product Development at Genentech.

Nicole Seligman

Nicole Seligman is a lawyer and corporate leader with a deep background in legal and compliance matters. Her experience includes:

  • Leadership Roles: Former EVP and General Counsel at Sony Corporation, President of Sony Entertainment, Inc., and President of Sony Corporation of America.
  • Board Experience: Current board member for Paramount Global, MeiraGTx Holdings PLC, and Intuitive Machines, Inc.
  • Legal Background: Former partner in the litigation practice at Williams & Connolly LLP and former law clerk to Justice Thurgood Marshall on the Supreme Court of the United States.

Fidji Simo

Fidji Simo is a consumer technology veteran with over 15 years of experience in product development and strategy. Her background includes:

  • Led Facebook App: Previously served as Vice President and Head of the Facebook App, overseeing News Feed, Stories, Groups, Video, Marketplace, Gaming, News, Dating, and Ads.
  • Current Roles: CEO and Chair of Instacart and member of the Board of Directors at Shopify.
  • Philanthropy: Founder and President of the Metrodora Foundation, a research foundation dedicated to neuroimmune axis disorders.

Strategic Objectives of the Expansion

According to Board Chair Bret Taylor, the addition of these members is designed to ensure the board can effectively oversee OpenAI's growth and maintain thes company's mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity.
