OpenAI Leadership Transition: Mira Murati Appointed Interim CEO
OpenAI has appointed Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati as interim CEO, effective immediately, following the the departure of Sam Altman from the CEO position and the board of directors. This transition occurs as the board of directors of OpenAI, Inc. begins a formal search for a permanent successor.
Leadership Changes and Appointments
OpenAI's board of directors has removed Sam Altman as CEO and he has departed the company. Mira Murati, who has been part of the leadership team for five years, will serve as interim CEO. Murati currently leads the company's research, product, and safety functions.
Mira Murati's Qualifications
The board cites Murati's long tenure and her existing leadership of research, product, and safety, as well as her experience in AI governance and policy, as the reasons she is uniquely qualified to lead the company during this transition.
Other Executive Changes
Greg Brockman has stepped down as chairman of the board, but will remain with the company in his role, reporting to the CEO.
Reasons for the Transition
The board of directors concluded that Sam Altman was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, which the board states hindered its ability to exercise its responsibilities. Consequently, the board expressed a lack of confidence in Altman's ability to continue leading OpenAI.
OpenAI Governance Structure
OpenAI, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that acts as the overall governing body for all OpenAI activities. The company was founded as a non-profit in 2015 with the mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity.
In 2019, the company restructured to allow for the capital raising necessary to pursue this mission while maintaining the nonprofit's mission, governance, and oversight. The majority of the board is independent, and these independent directors do not hold equity in OpenAI.
