The Top Slot Has Changed Hands Every Week; the Rest of the List Has Not

Between 2026-09-07 and 2026-09-14 the list barely changed and the order changed completely. Eight of these ten names were on the board last time, and four of them have been on every board we have published — yet the top slot has gone to a different project each of those weeks, and this one went to a repository that had never appeared here at all. Underneath the churn sits the more interesting result: the two runs we have been following in opposite directions since August, one climbing and one falling, both stopped this week and landed within a hair of each other. The rest holds its shape — mostly tools that discipline coding agents, with an audio suite, a video renderer and a file converter off to one side.

The fourth different leader in four weeks is a name we had never ranked. What it polices is not your code but the assistant's half of the conversation — a fixed ruleset that cuts preambles, opens with the action you can take next, and refuses to pad a list past a handful of items. Set beside the harnesses and rule-packs below it, this is the narrowest intervention on the board: it never touches what the agent builds, only what the agent says back. The rule-packs around it are trying to govern the output. This one is trying to govern the answer.

Last time we called this the steepest cooling on the board, and meant it as a finding rather than a blip. It has stopped. This week's gain came in fractionally above the one before it — no recovery, and nowhere near where it stood in August, but the first time since we began publishing that the fall did not continue. What read as a direction now reads as noise. Noise is what a floor looks like before anyone is willing to name it one.

This is the other end of that. Our last issue led with Ponytail — the one name gaining faster every time we looked, and the counterweight we used to explain DeepSeek Harness's decline. That run ended here: the gain fell back to roughly where it sat two issues ago, and the verdict went from a direction to none at all. Where it sits in the argument has not changed, though. Ponytail, Skills and this week's leader are three attacks on one instinct aimed at three different targets — what the agent says, how it works, and what it is allowed to write. Ponytail takes the last of those, putting a ladder in front of every new line: does this already exist here, does the standard library cover it, does the platform, would one line do.

HyperFrames is one of only two returning names that gained more than they did last time. It is also the odd one out by discipline: everything above it governs how an agent behaves, while this hands the agent a target instead — markup in, one deterministic MP4 out, so the same prompt twice produces the same frames twice.

Orca keeps arriving at the same number, week after week, close enough each time that the gaps are not worth reading. On a board where every other long run has reversed or broken, that flatness is the unusual result rather than the boring one: the audience for running several coding agents side by side and diffing their output is a fixed size, replenishing at the same rate, neither discovering the idea nor tiring of it.
