OpenAI and Microsoft Partner with Lenfest Institute for AI Collaborative and Fellowship Program

OpenAI and Microsoft have partnered with the Lenfest Institute for Journalism to launch the AI Collaborative and Fellowship program, an initiative designed to help local newsrooms implement artificial intelligence to drive business sustainability and innovation. The program provides funding and credits to enable independent publishers to access cutting-edge AI tools, ensuring they can compete with larger media organizations.

Program Funding and Structure

The AI Collaborative and Fellowship program is a two-year pilot supported by a total of up to $10 million in resources from OpenAI and Microsoft. Each company is contributing $2.5 million in direct funding and $2.5 million in software and enterprise credits.

The program is structured as a collaborative effort in partnership with the Lenfest Institute’s Local Independent News Coalition (LINC), which consists of eight of the largest independently owned metropolitan news organizations in the United States. In the initial round of funding, five newsrooms were selected to hire two-year AI fellows to pursue projects focused on business sustainability and AI implementation.

Selected Newsrooms and AI Project Focus

Five organizations have been awarded grants in the first round, with three additional organizations to be awarded fellows in a second round. The current participants include:

  • Chicago Public Media (The Chicago Sun-Times and WBEZ): Focusing on AI-driven transcription, summarization, and translation to expand content reach and audience growth.
  • The Minnesota Star Tribune: Experimenting with AI summarization, analysis, and content discovery for both readers and journalists.
  • Newsday: Developing AI tools for public data summarization and aggregation for internal newsroom use, readers, and as a marketing services offering for businesses.
  • The Philadelphia Inquirer: Building a conversational search interface for its archives and using AI to monitor and analyze media from local municipalities and agencies.
  • The Seattle Times: Utilizing AI platforms for advertising go-to-market strategies, sales training support, and sales analytics.

Strategic Goals for Local Journalism

The primary goal of the initiative is to empower local newsrooms to explore AI business solutions that maintain high ethical standards while strengthening their future financial prospects. The program focuses on several key areas of the use of AI in journalism:

  • Data Analysis: Leveraging AI for the analysis of public data.
  • Archive Utilization: Better utilizing news and visual archives.
  • Audience Engagement: Building new methods for audience engagement.
  • Product Development: Creating new AI-based news tools and products.

Industry-Wide Impact

To ensure the benefits of the program extend beyond the participants, the news organizations will work collaboratively to share learnings, case studies, technical information, and product developments. This approach is intended to create "lighthouses" for the industry, providing scalable examples of how AI can be used to build a sustainable business model for independent local journalism.
