OpenAI and American Journalism Project Partnership for Local News

OpenAI and the American Journalism Project (AJP) have entered into a partnership to explore how artificial intelligence can support the local news sector. This collaboration combines a $5 million financial commitment and up to $5 million in OpenAI API credits to help nonprofit local news organizations integrate AI technologies into their operations.

Financial and Technical Support

OpenAI is providing a total of up to $10 million in resources to AJP and its grantees. This support is divided into two primary components:

  • Direct Funding: A $5 million commitment to support the expansion of AJP's work.
  • API Credits: Up to $5 million in OpenAI API credits, allowing AJP's portfolio organizations to build and deploy tools utilizing OpenAI's technology.

Strategic Objectives and AI Applications

The partnership aims to establish a feedback loop between OpenAI and the local news industry to ensure AI enhances rather than imperils journalism. The collaboration focuses on three primary initiatives:

Technology and AI Studio

AJP will create a dedicated technology and AI studio. This studio will provide expert coaching and capacity building for portfolio organizations, fostering collaboration between newsrooms and AI vendors. The studio will also maintain a learning community to document and share best practices and guidelines as AI experiments unfold.

Pilot Investments

AJP will distribute direct grants to approximately ten portfolio organizations. These grantees will pilot various AI applications to serve as examples for the broader local news field on the effective use of AI-powered tools.

Potential AI Use Cases in Journalism

The partnership identifies several key opportunities for AI to improve journalism, including:

  • Data Analysis: Facilitating deeper analysis of public data and information.
  • User Experience: Strengthening and personalizing the user experience for readers.
  • Content Delivery: Developing new formats for delivering information.

Addressing Challenges and Risks

While recognizing the potential for AI to enhance journalism, the partnership explicitly addresses the risks associated with generative AI. Key challenges include the potential growth and spread of misinformation, as well as complex questions regarding bias, privacy, and copyright.

Founded in 2019, the American Journalism Project is a venture philanthropy organization that has raised $139 million to date and backed 41 nonprofit local news organizations. AJP operates on the evidence that robust local journalism is essential for a healthy democracy, as the decline of local news weakens the ability of residents to hold leaders accountable and connect with their neighbors.
