OpenAI News Industry Partnerships and Axios Expansion
OpenAI has entered a new content partnership with Axios and provided funding to expand Axios Local's coverage into four new cities: Pittsburgh, Pa.; Kansas City, Mo.; Boulder, Colo.; and Huntsville, Ala. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to support a healthy news ecosystem by integrating AI into newsroom workflows and increasing the discoverability of trusted journalism within ChatGPT.
Integration of News Content into ChatGPT Search
OpenAI has partnered with nearly 20 media organizations, extending its technology to over 160 news outlets and hundreds of content brands across more than 20 languages. These partnerships—which include organizations such as News Corp, The Atlantic, Vox Media, Prisa Media, Condé Nast, Hearst, and Dotdash Meredith—enable ChatGPT search to feature summaries and excerpts from trusted media outlets. These results include clear citations and direct links to original sources to drive engagement for OpenAI's 300 million weekly active users across 150 countries.
AI Implementation Across Global Newsrooms
Publishers are utilizing OpenAI technology to automate manual tasks, personalize user experiences, and optimize internal business operations. Key implementations include:
Production and Workflow Efficiency
- The Associated Press: Increased Spanish language translations by 40% and doubled Portuguese translations. The AP also uses AI for search-optimized headlines, related article suggestions, and data mining to provide tips to local newsrooms.
- Le Monde: Streamlines the processing of news dispatches and enriches articles with relevant content to free up time for innovative formats like podcasts and videos.
- Financial Times: Employs ChatGPT Enterprise for approximately 1,400 weekly users. The FT is testing a custom GPT model to flag advertisements that may not meet UK advertising industry standards.
User Engagement and Interactive Experiences
- Axel Springer: Developed "Hey_", a generative AI news assistant that has answered over 100 million questions on the BILD brand and is integrated into WELT.
- The Atlantic: Created "Atlantic Labs," an R&D site featuring the "Atlantic Companion" (a chatbot accessing a 167-year archive) and "Atlantic Explorer" (a guided thematic journey).
- TIME: Launched an AI Toolbar featuring an interactive chat box and seamless language translation for its Person of the Year content.
- Prisa Media: Rolled out an AI assistant for El País to provide users with real-time access to curated content.
- Hearst: Developed smart recommendation engines for local dining via the San Francisco Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News, and an AI-powered gift guide for Good Housekeeping.
Business and Ad Operations
- Dotdash Meredith: Uses "D/Cipher," an AI-powered tool that analyzes millions of content connections to target ads based on intent rather than cookies or personal data.
- Vox Media: Utilizes "Sponsor Scout" to align editorial initiatives with advertisers and an internal bot to analyze page view and customer loyalty trends.
- Hearst: Uses custom GPTs to accelerate and optimize sales processes for both its television and newspaper divisions.
Grants and Fellowships for AI Innovation
OpenAI is providing financial and technical support to local and global news organizations through three primary initiatives:
American Journalism Project
OpenAI funded the Product & AI Studio to support 50 local news organizations across 35 states. This studio helps outlets like Open Campus and Spotlight PA use AI for transcribing civic meeting notes, translating articles, and providing election information.
Lenfest Institute for Journalism Fellowships
OpenAI provides API credits and expertise to fellowships at organizations including the Philadelphia Inquirer, The Seattle Times, and the Minneapolis Star Tribune to reimagine newsroom operations and audience engagement.
WAN-IFRA’s Newsroom AI Catalyst Program
In partnership with WAN-IFRA, OpenAI is supporting 128 newsrooms across Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and South Asia. The program provides AI implementation education and helps participants create tailored AI prototypes.
