OpenAI Scholars 2019 Program Announcement

OpenAI has launched applications for the second cohort of the OpenAI Scholars program. This initiative provides 6–10 individuals from underrepresented groups with stipends and mentorship to study deep learning full-time for three months and complete an open-source project.

Program Goals and Diversity

OpenAI states that diversity is essential for ensuring that future advanced AI systems benefit everyone. The primary goal of the program is to increase diversity within the broader deep learning field, although OpenAI also hopes some participants may eventually join the organization.

Program Benefits and Support

Accepted scholars receive a comprehensive support package designed to facilitate full-time study and project development:

  • Financial Support: A monthly stipend of $7,500 for three months (from February 1, 2019, to May 2, 2019).
  • Compute Resources: $25,000 in Amazon Web Services (AWS) credits.
  • Career Opportunities: A guaranteed interview with OpenAI for full-time employment upon completion of the program.
  • Mentorship and Networking: Access to a group Slack for collaboration and 1:1 weekly video calls with a mentor. Mentors for the 2019 cohort include Josh Achiam, Kai Arulkumaran, Feryal Behbahani, Rewon Child, Christy Dennison, Azalia Mirhoseini, Jonathan Raiman, Lilian Weng, and Susan Zhang.
  • Workspace: Optional desk space at the OpenAI office for those located in the Bay Area.

Eligibility and Application Criteria

OpenAI is seeking applicants who are comfortable writing software but do not necessarily require previous machine learning experience or a PhD. The program is remote and open to anyone with US work authorization located in US timezones, with a preference for those who can be physically present.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a member of an underrepresented group in science and engineering.
  • Possess US work authorization and be located in the United States for the duration of the program.
  • Understand basic calculus and linear algebra.
  • Be proficient in programming with Python.

Selection Criteria

Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis based on the following three pillars:

  1. Technical Skills: Stronger technical backgrounds allow scholars to focus more heavily on deep learning.
  2. Self-motivation: Evidence of the ability to persevere through challenging work.
  3. Community Building: The capacity to inspire others to learn deep learning both within and outside the program.
