OpenAI Fellows Program Fall 2018
OpenAI has announced the OpenAI Fellows program for Fall 2018, a specialized training initiative designed for individuals who wish to become AI researchers but lack a formal background in the field. This program creates an alternative entry point into the high-level research environment of OpenAI, allowing non-traditional candidates to transition into professional AI research.
Program Structure and Curriculum
The OpenAI Fellows program is a six-month engagement divided into two distinct phases. Fellows will be mentored by an OpenAI researcher and work within existing research teams.
Phase 1: Foundation and Proposal
During the first two months, Fellows work through a curriculum of key AI topics and learn about ongoing research projects at OpenAI. This phase culminates in theing writing of a research proposal based on the person's specific interests.
Phase 2: Project Execution
Following the initial training, Fellows spend the next four months executing the project outlined in their research proposal under the guidance of their mentor.
Research Areas and Eligibility
Fellows have the opportunity to work on diverse AI research topics, including:
- Multi-agent reinforcement learning
- Generative models
- Robotics
The program is specifically designed for those transitioning into AI research. The current cohort includes individuals with backgrounds in genetics, physics, theoretical computer science, and software engineering. Applicants must demonstrate their interest in AI research through evidence of significant self-study or past projects. Those currently enrolled in a degree program are encouraged to apply for internships instead of the Fellows program.
Application and Logistics
OpenAI will prioritize applicants who can join the company full-time following the completion of the program. The program is compensated at the level of selective Bay Area software internships.
For the September cohort, OpenAI can accommodate up to six fellows. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and applicants will be notified of their admission status by July 31, 2018.
