ChatGPT Pulse Preview
OpenAI has released a preview of ChatGPT Pulse, a new experience that shifts ChatGPT from a reactive question-and-answer tool to a proactive assistant. Pulse performs asynchronous research to deliver personalized, topical updates to users each day, reducing the burden on the user to initiate every interaction.
Proactive Daily Research and Delivery
ChatGPT Pulse synthesizes information from user memory, chat history, and direct feedback to conduct research overnight. Every morning, the system delivers a focused set of updates presented as topical visual cards that users can scan quickly or expand for more detail.
These updates are designed to be timely and goal-oriented, such as:
- Follow-ups on frequent topics: Continuing research on subjects the user discusses often.
- Goal tracking: Providing next steps for long-term objectives, such as training for a triathlon.
- Daily utility: Suggesting quick, healthy dinner ideas for the evening.
App Integrations for Enhanced Context
To increase the relevance of suggestions, Pulse allows users to connect Gmail and Google Calendar. These integrations are disabled by default and can be toggled in settings. When active, Pulse can use calendar data to:
- Draft sample meeting agendas.
- Provide restaurant recommendations for upcoming trips.
- Send reminders to purchase birthday gifts.
User Curation and Feedback Loops
Users maintain control over the content Pulse researches through a "curate" function and direct feedback mechanisms. Users can explicitly request specific research topics for future editions, such as professional tennis updates or local event roundups.
Feedback is integrated through:
- Thumbs up/down reactions: Quick signals to refine the AI's understanding of preferences.
- Direct instructions: Telling ChatGPT what to prioritize or ignore.
- Feedback history: A dedicated view where users can see or delete their feedback history.
Updates are available for one day only unless the user saves them as a chat or asks a follow-up question, at which point they are added to the conversation history.
Safety and Limitations
All topics displayed in Pulse undergo safety checks to ensure they do not violate OpenAI's policies regarding harmful content.
As a preview feature, Pulse may occasionally provide irrelevant suggestions, such as tips for a project that has already been completed. OpenAI notes that the system improves as it learns from user feedback and direct guidance.
Future Roadmap for Proactive AI
Pulse represents the first step toward a paradigm where AI can research, plan, and take actions on a user's behalf. OpenAI's vision for the evolution of ChatGPT includes:
- Expanded Integrations: Connecting with a wider array of third-party apps to capture a more complete context of the user's life.
- Intelligent Timing: Delivering relevant work or resources at specific moments throughout the day, such as providing a resource exactly when it is needed or a reminder to revisit a draft before a meeting.
- Autonomous Progress: Moving toward a system that accelerates work and ideas even when the user is not actively prompting the AI.
