Introducing ChatGPT search
OpenAI has integrated a new web search capability into ChatGPT, enabling users to receive fast, timely answers with direct links to relevant web sources. This update blends a natural language interface with real-time data for queries involving news, sports scores, stock quotes, and other time-sensitive information.
Conversational Web Search Capabilities
ChatGPT search allows users to find information using natural, conversational language, reducing the need for multiple manual searches and the digging through of various links. The system can automatically decide when to search the web based on the user's query, or users can manually trigger a search by clicking the web search icon.
Key features of the search experience include:
- Contextual Follow-ups: ChatGPT considers the full context of the conversation to refine answers as users ask follow-up questions.
- Specialized Visual Designs: Through partnerships with news and data providers, ChatGPT features dedicated visual designs for categories such as weather, stocks, sports, news, and maps.
- Direct Source Attribution: Responses include links to original sources like blog posts and news articles. A "Sources" button allows users to open a sidebar containing all references used in the response.
Technical Implementation and Model Architecture
The search functionality is powered by a fine-tuned version of GPT-4o. This model was post-trained using novel synthetic data generation techniques, which included distilling outputs from OpenAI o1-preview.
To retrieve information, ChatGPT search utilizes a combination of third-party search providers and content provided directly by OpenAI's partners. The current experience is a result of feedback gathered from the SearchGPT prototype.
