Introducing The Anthropic Institute

Anthropic has launched The Anthropic Institute, a new initiative designed to address the societal challenges arising from the rapid acceleration of powerful AI systems. The Institute aims to provide research and information to the public and other researchers to facilitate a stable transition to a world with transformative AI.

The Mission and Rationale for the Institute

The Anthropic Institute is founded on the conviction that AI development is compounding and accelerating. Anthropic predicts that significant progress will occur over the next two years, leading to the AI systems described in Dario Amodei's "Machines of Loving Grace" to arrive sooner than widely expected.

As these systems emerge, the Institute will focus on several critical societal questions:

  • Economic Impact: How powerful AI will reshape jobs and economies.
  • Societal Resilience: Identifying opportunities for greater resilience and threats that AI may magnify or introduce.
  • AI Values: Determining the expressed values of AI systems and how society should define appropriate values.
  • Governance: Establishing who should be notified and how systems should be governed if recursive self-improvement occurs.

Organizational Structure and Leadership

The Institute is led by co-founder Jack Clark, who now serves as Anthropic's Head of Public Benefit. The organization consists of an interdisciplinary staff of social scientists, economists, and machine learning engineers. It integrates and expands three existing Anthropic research teams:

  1. Frontier Red Team: Focuses on stress-testing AI systems to identify the outermost limits of current capabilities.
  2. Societal Impacts: Studies the real-world application and usage of AI.
  3. Economic Research: Tracks the impact of AI on the broader economy and employment.

Additionally, the Institute is incubating new teams to forecast AI progress and analyze the interaction between powerful AI and the legal system.

Key Hires and Strategic Focus

The Institute has recruited several specialists to lead specific research agendas:

  • Matt Botvinick: A former Senior Director of Research at Google DeepMind and Professor at Princeton, joining to lead work on AI and the rule of law.
  • Anton Korinek: A Professor of Economics at the University of Virginia (on leave), leading research into how transformative AI reshapes economic activity.
  • Zo¹ Hitzig: Formerly of OpenAI, joining to connect economic research directly to model training and development.

The Institute intends to use its unique vantage point as a builder of frontier models to report candidly on the technology's trajectory while engaging with industries and communities facing displacement.

Expansion of Public Policy Organization

Parallel to the launch of the Institute, Anthropic is expanding its Public Policy organization, led by Sarah Heck (formerly of Stripe and the White House National Security Council). This team focuses on global AI governance and specific priorities including:

  • Model safety and transparency
  • Infrastructure investments and energy ratepayer protections
  • Export controls
  • Democratic leadership in AI

To support these efforts, Anthropic is opening its first Washington DC office in the spring of 2026.
