OpenAI and AFT Launch National Academy for AI Instruction

OpenAI and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) have launched the National Academy for AI Instruction, a five-year initiative designed to equip 400,000 K-12 educators—approximately one in ten teachers in the US—with the skills to lead the integration of AI in classrooms. This partnership aims to ensure that AI empowers educators and students while maintaining the central role of the teacher in the learning process.

Funding and Resource Allocation

OpenAI is the founding partner of the Academy, contributing $10 million over five years. This investment is split into $8 million in direct funding and $2 million in in-kind resources, which include computing access, technical guidance, and engineering support to help teachers develop and deploy AI tools in real-world classroom settings.

Other supporting partners in this initiative include the United Federation of Teachers, Microsoft, and Anthropic.

Strategic Goals and Implementation

The National Academy for AI Instruction will operate as a national hub for free training and curriculum, blending classroom expertise with technical innovation. The initiative focuses on three primary delivery mechanisms:

  • Infrastructure: The establishment of a flagship facility in New York City, with plans to scale into additional hubs across the US by 2030.
  • Training: The delivery of workshops, online courses, and hands-on training sessions to help educators develop practical AI fluency.
  • Equity: A prioritization of broad access and measurable impact, specifically targeting high-needs school districts to ensure accessibility.

Direct Support for Educators

Through OpenAI's specific contributions, educators and course developers will receive several technical advantages to facilitate the creation of classroom-specific tools:

  • Priority Access: Early and priority access to OpenAI's technology and tools specifically designed for education.
  • Development Credits: API credits and tokens to build custom tools tailored to specific classroom needs.
  • Integration Support: Technical assistance to integrate AI tools into the Academy's learning platform and existing school learning systems.

Perspectives on AI in Education

The initiative is framed as a response to both the efficiency gains and the pedagogical challenges of AI. A Gallup study cited by OpenAI indicates that 6 in 10 educators already use AI tools, saving an average of six hours per week.

However, leadership from both OpenAI and the AFT emphasizes that technology should supplement rather than replace the human element of teaching. As Randi Weingarten, President of the AFT, stated:

"AI holds tremendous promise but huge challenges—and it‒s our job as educators to make sure AI serves our students and society, not the other way around. The direct connection between a teacher and their kids can never be replaced by new technologies, but if we learn how to harness it, set commonsense guardrails and put teachers in the driver's seat, teaching and learning can be enhanced."

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, echoed this sentiment, noting that educators should lead the shift toward AI integration to ensure the technology serves the educational mission.
