xAI has introduced Grok for Excel, a free Microsoft 365 add-in that integrates Grok's AI capabilities directly into Microsoft Excel workbooks. This tool allows users to interact with their spreadsheet data using plain English, reducing the need for manual formula writing and complex data analysis.

Data Analysis and Natural Language Querying

Grok for Excel enables users to ask questions about specific data ranges within a workbook. The add-in can identify trends, explain what has changed, and highlight standout figures. To ensure transparency and accuracy, answers provided by Grok cite the specific cells from which the data was retrieved. Additionally, the tool can generate charts that can be inserted directly into the sheet alongside the data.

Formula Generation and Scenario Testing

Users can generate complex Excel formulas by describing the desired outcome in plain English. Grok handles the syntax for tasks such as averages, sorts, and fills, applying these as standard edits in the formula bar.

Beyond formula writing, the add-in supports scenario testing and forecasting. Users can test downside cases or rerun forecasts without having to manually rebuild the spreadsheet structure.
