Anthropic and the US Department of Energy (DOE) have launched a multi-year partnership under the Genesis Mission, a DOE initiative designed to maintain American scientific leadership by combining frontier AI with the nation's scientific infrastructure. This collaboration aims to integrate AI capabilities across all 17 US national laboratories to accelerate discovery in energy, biology, and general research productivity.

Core Objectives of the Genesis Mission Partnership

The partnership focuses on three primary domains to leverage AI for national security and scientific advancement:

American Energy Dominance

Claude is being deployed to accelerate energy expansion and security. Key applications include:

Permitting Review: Speeding up the review processes that currently bottleneck energy expansion.
Nuclear Technology: Assisting scientists in conducting research at the frontier of nuclear technology to strengthen domestic energy security.

Biological and Life Sciences

AI integration aims to enhance public health and pharmaceutical development through:

Threat Detection: Developing early-warning systems for future pandemics and biological threat detection.
Drug Discovery: Increasing the speed of drug discovery and development processes.

Scientific Productivity

Anthropic intends to use Claude to synthesize decades of institutional knowledge to shorten the research cycle. Specifically, Claude can access fifty years of DOE research to identify patterns in legacy data that humans may have missed and generate new hypotheses for trial.

Technical Implementation and Tooling

Anthropic is providing DOE researchers with access to Claude and a dedicated engineering team to build purpose-built tools. The technical implementation includes:
