Anthropic and U.S. National Labs Partner for 1,000 Scientist AI Jam

Anthropic has partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the first-ever 1,000 Scientist AI Jam. This initiative brings together scientists from multiple National Laboratories to evaluate frontier AI models, specifically Claude 3.7 Sonnet, on their ability to accelerate scientific discovery and address national security applications.

Evaluation of Claude 3.7 Sonnet in Scientific Research

Scientists from various National Laboratories will use Claude 3.7 Sonnet—the first hybrid reasoning model on the market—to tackle real-world research problems within their specific domains. The goal is to provide an authentic assessment of how AI can manage the complexities of scientific inquiry and solve challenges that typically require significant time and resources.

The evaluation will focus on several key scientific tasks, including:

• Problem understanding and literature search
• Hypothesis generation
• Experiment planning
• Code generation
• Result analysis

Expansion of National Security and Government Partnerships

This collaboration expands upon Anthropic's existing relationship with the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). In April 2024, Anthropic became the first frontier lab to collaborate with the NNSA and DOE National Laboratories to evaluate a model in a Top Secret classified environment. That initial effort focused on determining how large language models might contribute to or help address national security risks in the nuclear domain.

While the previous work focused on security testing, the 1,000 Scientist AI Jam shifts the focus toward exploring how AI can contribute to solving pressing scientific challenges and providing the lab with feedback to improve Claude for the scientific community.
