Anthropic and Gates Foundation Partnership for Global AI Impact
Anthropic has entered into a partnership with the Gates Foundation to commit $200 million in grant funding, Claude usage credits, and technical support over the next four years. This initiative targets four priority areas—global health, life sciences, education, and economic mobility—specifically focusing on regions and sectors where market forces alone are insufficient to drive AI adoption.
Global Health and Life Sciences
Anthropic and the Gates Foundation are prioritizing the improvement of health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries, where approximately 4.6 billion people lack access to essential health services. The partnership focuses on accelerating vaccine and therapy development and enhancing government use of health data for decision-making.
Healthcare Intelligence and Infrastructure
To support healthcare intelligence, Anthropic is developing the following tools:
- Connectors: Systems that grant Claude direct access to other platforms and tools.
- Benchmarks and Evaluation Frameworks: Tools to allow researchers, developers, and governments to measure AI performance on healthcare-related tasks.
These tools will be used to engage health ministries and implementing partners to optimize workforce deployment, supply chain management, and outbreak detection. Additionally, the partnership explores how AI can assist frontline health workers and patients with diagnosis, treatment, and medical decision-making.
Research on Neglected Diseases
Claude is being applied to research on high-burden and neglected diseases, specifically targeting polio, HPV, and eclampsia/preeclampsia. The partnership aims to shorten early-stage development timelines by using Claude to computationally screen potential vaccine candidates and therapies before moving to pre-clinical development.
This is particularly critical for HPV, which causes roughly 350,000 annual deaths, 90% of which occur in low- and middle-income countries. Furthermore, Anthropic is partnering with the Institute for Disease Modeling (IDM) to integrate Claude into disease transmission forecasts for malaria and tuberculosis, making these models more accessible to non-specialists.
Education
Anthropic is co-developing AI tools to improve K-12 educational outcomes in the US, sub-Saharan Africa, and India. This effort includes the creation of public goods such as model benchmarks, datasets, and knowledge graphs for math tutoring, college advising, and curriculum design, with the first releases expected later in 2026.
Regional applications include:
- United States: Evidence-based tutoring for K-12 students and career guidance for those entering the workforce.
- Sub-Saharan Africa and India: AI-powered applications supporting foundational literacy and numeracy programs, developed as part of the Global AI for Learning Alliance (GAILA).
Economic Mobility
The partnership targets economic mobility through agricultural productivity and workforce development.
Agricultural Productivity
To support the nearly two billion people dependent on smallholder farming, Anthropic will implement agriculture-specific improvements to Claude, create datasets of local crops, and develop benchmarks to evaluate agricultural AI performance. These tools will be released as public goods.
US Workforce Development
In the United States, the partnership focuses on three primary objectives:
- Portable Records: Developing systems for skills and certifications that can be carried across different schools and jobs.
- Career Guidance: Providing trustworthy guidance for new job market entrants and those retraining.
- Employment Outcome Tracking: Linking training program data to employment outcomes to measure the effectiveness of economic mobility interventions on wages and jobs.
