xAI Introduces Grok Automations

xAI has introduced Automations in Grok, a feature set that allows users to define a job once and have the AI execute it autonomously on a schedule or based on specific triggers. This transforms Grok from a reactive chat interface into a proactive agentic system capable of performing recurring research and monitoring tasks.

Autonomous Job Execution

Automations in Grok function as saved instructions that execute as fresh requests using current data. Users define the job by describing the desired outcome in plain language, attaching necessary context files, and adding specific connectors or skills. Each time an automation runs, it initiates a new conversation thread based on these saved instructions.

Scheduling and Trigger Mechanisms

Users can automate Grok's activity through two primary mechanisms: time-based schedules and event-based triggers.

Time-Based Schedules

Scheduled automations can be configured to run at a specific time in the user's timezone. Available frequencies include:

  • Once
  • Daily
  • Weekdays
  • Weekly
  • Monthly
  • Yearly

Email Triggers

Email triggers allow Grok to monitor an inbox and execute an automation when an incoming email matches specific filters based on the sender, recipient, or subject. In these instances, the automation fires with the specific email as context, allowing Grok to respond directly to the message content.

Integration and Tool Use

Automations are integrated with Grok's existing ecosystem of connectors and skills. Users can mention a connector using the @ symbol within the instructions to ensure Grok utilizes that specific tool on every run. Users also have the option to trigger a manual run using the "Run now" feature for testing purposes.

Output and Reporting

Every execution of an automation creates a full conversation thread saved to the run history. This allows users to review the work performed or continue the conversation where the AI left off. Users can configure reporting methods for each automation, choosing between email notifications, app notifications, or no notification.

Setup and Availability

Automations can be created through three different methods: manually on the Automations page, via suggested templates, or directly within a chat by asking Grok to set up a recurring task.
