Anthropic Higher Education Initiatives: Advisory Board and AI Fluency Courses

Anthropic has introduced a Higher Education Advisory Board and three new AI Fluency courses to ensure the responsible integration of AI into academic environments. These initiatives aim to provide strategic guidance for Claude's development and practical, adaptable frameworks for educators and students to build AI literacy.

Higher Education Advisory Board

Anthropic has established a Higher Education Advisory Board composed of academic leaders to guide how Claude is utilized for research, teaching, and learning. The board's primary objective is to ensure that AI strengthens critical thinking and learning skills rather than undermining them.

The board is chaired by Rick Levin, former President of Yale University (1993-2013) and former CEO of Coursera (2014-2017). Other distinguished members include:

  • David Leebron: Former President of Rice University.
  • James DeVaney: Special Advisor to the President and Founding Executive Director of the Center for Academic Innovation at the University of Michigan.
  • Julie Schell: Assistant Vice Provost of Academic Technology at University of Texas, Austin.
  • Matthew Rascoff: Vice Provost for Digital Education at Stanford University.
  • Yolanda Watson Spiva: President of Complete College America.

According to Rick Levin, the board's role is to advise Anthropic on "ethically sound policies and products that will enable learners, teachers, and administrators to benefit from AI’s transformative potential while upholding the highest standards of academic integrity and protecting student privacy."

AI Fluency Courses for Educators and Students

Co-developed with Professor Rick Dakan (Ringling College of Art and Design) and Professor Joseph Feller (University College Cork), Anthropic has released three new courses designed for practical AI integration. These courses are available under a Creative Commons license, allowing institutions to adapt them to their specific needs.

AI Fluency for Educators

This course focuses on helping faculty integrate AI into teaching practices, including the creation of assessments, instructional materials, and the enhancement of classroom discussions based on real-world classroom experience.

AI Fluency for Students

This course teaches students how to collaborate with AI responsibly for career planning and coursework. It emphasizes the development of critical thinking skills and requires students to write a personal commitment to responsible AI use.

Teaching AI Fluency

This course is designed for educators who want to implement AI literacy on their campuses. It provides curriculum considerations and frameworks for both instruction and assessment to prepare students for an AI-enhanced world.

Strategic Implementation

These initiatives combine long-term strategic guidance via the advisory board with immediate, practical tools via the AI Fluency courses. Anthropic states that these resources are intended to help universities navigate the transformation of education thoughtfully and responsibly as they determine the role of AI in the classroom.
