Anthropic and Amazon Expand Collaboration for 5GW Compute Capacity

Anthropic and Amazon have expanded their partnership to secure up to 5 gigawatts (GW) of new compute capacity and commit over $100 billion to AWS technologies over the next decade. This expansion is designed to meet surging demand for Claude across enterprise and consumer tiers and ensure the reliability of the model's infrastructure.

Massive Infrastructure Expansion and Custom Silicon

Anthropic is committing more than $100 billion over ten years to AWS technologies to secure up to 5GW of capacity for training and deploying Claude. This infrastructure commitment spans multiple generations of Amazon's custom silicon, including Graviton and Trainium2 through Trainium4 chips, with options to purchase future generations as they become available.

Key capacity milestones include:

  • Q2 2026: Significant Trainium2 capacity coming online.
  • Late 2026: Scaled Trainium3 capacity expected to come online.
  • Year-end 2026: Nearly 1GW of total Trainium2 and Trainium3 capacity will be available.

Anthropic currently utilizes over one million Trainium2 chips and continues to use AWS as the primary cloud provider for mission-critical workloads. The agreement also includes the expansion of inference capabilities in Asia and Europe to support an international customer base.

Integration of Claude Platform on AWS

AWS will soon host the full Claude Platform directly. This integration allows organizations to access Claude using their existing AWS accounts, controls, and billing systems without requiring additional credentials or contracts. This enables enterprises to meet governance and compliance requirements while accessing frontier AI models.

Anthropic notes that Claude remains the only frontier AI model available across all three major cloud platforms: AWS (Bedrock), Google Cloud (Vertex AI), and Microsoft Azure (Foundry).

Financial Investment and Growth Metrics

Amazon is providing an immediate investment of $5 billion in Anthropic, with a potential for up to an additional $20 billion in the future. This follows a previous investment of $8 billion from Amazon.

This investment comes during a period of rapid growth for Anthropic. The company reported that its run-rate revenue has surpassed $30 billion, increasing from approximately $9 billion at the end of 2025. This growth has been driven by accelerated demand from enterprises, developers, and consumers across free, Pro, Max, and Team tiers.

Addressing Infrastructure Strain

Rapid consumer growth has placed strain on Anthropic's infrastructure, impacting reliability and performance for users during peak hours. The new agreement with Amazon is intended to resolve these issues by delivering meaningful compute capacity within the next three months and nearly 1GW of total capacity before the end of the year.

Anthropic is employing a diversified hardware strategy, spreading workloads across a range of chips and combining this AWS expansion with other capacity expansions to maintain Claude's position at the frontier of AI research and service delivery.
