Home Assistant Agent Skills – What It Is

Home Assistant Agent Skills is a small open‑source package that ships a skill for AI‑coding assistants (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, etc.). In the Agent Skills ecosystem a skill is a Markdown‑based knowledge pack that the assistant can load at runtime and use to guide its code‑generation. This particular skill teaches the assistant the best‑practice patterns for writing Home Assistant automations, dashboards, backups, AppDaemon apps and more.

How It Works

  1. Installation – You add the repository with the npx skills add homeassistant-ai/skills command (or via Claude Code’s plugin marketplace). The installer copies the skill’s files into the assistant’s skill directory.
  2. Automatic activation – Once installed, the assistant automatically consults the skill whenever it is asked to create or edit Home Assistant configuration (automations, scripts, dashboards, blueprints, etc.). No extra command is needed.
  3. Content – The core of the skill is SKILL.md, which contains a decision workflow and an “anti‑pattern” table that lists common mistakes (e.g., using a Jinja template where a native numeric_state condition exists) and the correct Home Assistant‑native alternative. Supporting reference files (Markdown and a YAML examples file) give deeper guidance on triggers, helpers, dashboards, backups, AppDaemon, and more.
