ShipBit/slickgpt

SlickGPT is a light-weight "use-your-own-API-key" web client for the OpenAI API written in Svelte. It offers GPT-4 integration, a userless share feature and other superpowers.

What it solves

SlickGPT is a web-based client for chatting with AI models. It was created to give users more control and features than the standard ChatGPT interface. It solves the problem of users not having to rely on a single hosted service, because you can use your own API key or subscribe for unlimited use. It also solves the issue of chat history being hosted in the cloud by storing it locally in your browser. Additionally, it allows sharing chats without requiring others to log in.

How it works

SlickGPT is built with Svelte and SvelteKit. It stores almost everything in your browser's IndexedDB, including chat history. When you talk, it sends requests to the OpenAI API (or compatible APIs) using a simple POST, and receives responses as a live stream using the EventSource API, similar to how ChatGPT streams responses. If you choose to share a chat, it saves the chat data to a Firebase Realtime Database and gives you a link. The app also provides a proxy via Svelte endpoints to keep API and Firebase secrets away from the client. To run it, you can host it yourself or use the public instance (which is now offline).

Who it's for

SlickGPT is designed for people who want an alternative to the standard ChatGPT web interface. It is suitable for developers who want to self-host their own AI chat client, power users who want more control over model settings and costs, and anyone who prefers to keep chat history local or share chats without requiring recipients to log in.
