Lowe's AI Implementation with OpenAI GPT-4o

Lowe's has partnered with OpenAI to integrate GPT-4o into its customer and employee experience. By shifting from a product-centric to a project-centric approach, Lowe's is using generative AI to provide expert-level guidance to both online shoppers and in-store associates.

AI-Powered Project Guidance: Mylow and Mylow Companion

Lowe's has deployed two primary AI experiences powered by GPT-4o to scale expertise across its digital and physical storefronts:

  • Mylow: A conversational AI advisor on Lowes.com. It allows customers to describe projects in natural language and receive step-by-step guidance, product recommendations, and links to instructional content. This tool is designed to reduce the need for customers to search across multiple platforms (e.g., Google, YouTube) to plan a project.
  • Mylow Companion: A mobile application for in-store associates. It provides fast, conversational answers regarding product compatibility, installation steps, and availability. This tool is intended to give newer or seasonal associates the knowledge base of a veteran employee.

Enhancing In-Store Operations and Associate Confidence

Mylow Companion is designed to support associates in real-time, reducing the friction of finding information in stores that can reach 130,000 square feet. Key capabilities include:

  • Project-Based Recommendations: The AI understands project intent. For example, if an associate asks about patching drywall, the tool automatically suggests "attachments" such as tape and sandpaper.
  • Voice Interaction: Because associates are often moving or carrying products, over 50% of interactions with Mylow Companion occur via voice, making the tool more natural for the store environment.
  • Efficiency Gains: The tool allows a single associate to resolve complex queries—such as replacing a hose bib—in minutes, whereas previously multiple employees might have spent 30 minutes searching for a solution.

Strategic AI Operating Model

Lowe's has implemented a structured AI strategy to ensure technical solutions are tied to business outcomes. This operating model is based on three pillars:

  1. How we shop: Focused on customer-facing experiences like Mylow.
  2. How we sell: Focused on associate-facing tools like Mylow Companion.
  3. How we work: Focused on internal solutions for finance, engineering, and merchandising.

To ensure effectiveness, every AI project requires a business sponsor at the SVP level. Additionally, development involved a tight feedback loop where engineers worked directly in store aisles to observe associate workflows and identify friction points.

Impact and Future Expansion

Lowe's reports several key outcomes following the implementation of GPT-4o tools:

  • Full Deployment: Mylow Companion has been rolled out to 1,700 stores.
  • Customer Behavior: Customers using Mylow show stronger signs of purchase intent, spend more time exploring, and maintain fuller carts.
  • Associate Impact: There is a higher level of confidence among seasonal and newer hires.

Lowe's plans to further expand its AI capabilities by integrating natural voice interaction into Mylow Companion and adopting ChatGPT Enterprise for employees at its Store Support Center (HQ).
