Mercari AI Integration with GPT-4o mini
Mercari has integrated GPT-4o mini and other OpenAI models to automate product listing generation and optimize sales suggestions. These enhancements reduce friction for sellers by automating the creation of high-quality product pages, which has led to a statistically significant increase in average sales per user and improved listing conversion rates.
AI-Driven Listing Optimization
Mercari uses a hybrid AI approach to help sellers improve their listings and increase the likelihood of a sale. The Mercari AI Assistant, launched in October 2023, evaluates active listings against best practices and provides tailored suggestions for improvement if an item remains unsold for a specific period.
This system utilizes two distinct OpenAI models for different stages of the analysis:
- Offline analysis: GPT-4 is used to analyze top-performing listings in each category to identify key attributes that drive sales.
- Online suggestions: GPT-3.5 Turbo evaluates a user's active listing in real-time to provide specific improvement tips.
Streamlining the Listing Process with AI Listing Support
Launched in September 2024, AI Listing Support allows users to create product listings by simply uploading photos. The system suggests relevant categories and generates complete titles and descriptions tailored to the product and its specific category.
While the feature was originally developed with GPT-4, Mercari transitioned to GPT-4o mini to achieve superior cost-efficiency and reduced latency. This transition enabled the platform to process multiple images per listing, which improved the quality of the AI-generated content. According to Mercari, the feature now facilitates over a few hundred AI-assisted listings per minute, leading to a substantial boost in listing conversion rates.
Organizational Strategy for AI Adoption
Mercari's AI integration was driven by a combination of top-down leadership and bottom-up innovation. The company's leadership, including the Group CEO and C2C Marketplace CEO, provided strong support for AI initiatives to ensure the company did not miss the "AI wave."
Simultaneously, developers across the organization experimented with AI tools, creating Slack bots and internal web applications. Mercari has since created a centralized hub where employees can submit these tools and bots to foster a collaborative environment for AI integration.
Future AI Roadmap at Mercari
Mercari envisions AI as a transformative force across its entire ecosystem, focusing on three primary goals:
- Flagship Feature Development: Continuing to expand and improve key offerings like AI Listing Support.
- AI Building Blocks: Providing foundational AI components (described as "Lego blocks") to all product teams, allowing them to implement AI solutions without needing internal AI specialists.
- Internal Productivity: Leveraging AI to build new tools and services to boost productivity across the Mercari Group.
Future developments include AI-powered search and recommendation features, fraud detection, and customer support. Additionally, the Supply team is exploring ways to use OpenAI models to assist users with post-sale tasks, such as selecting the correct packaging and shipping methods.
