OpenAI Nonprofit Jam Initiative

OpenAI has launched the Nonprofit Jam, a nationwide initiative designed to provide nonprofit leaders with the practical skills and tools necessary to integrate generative AI into their community work. This effort aims to bridge the gap for organizations that often operate with limited budgets and staff, ensuring that transformative AI technology is accessible to those serving underserved communities.

Key Objectives and Structure

The Nonprofit Jam is a one-day event series held across 10 US locations, bringing together more than 1,000 nonprofit leaders. The program is a collaboration between the OpenAI Academy, the Walton Family Foundation, and the Emerson Collective, supported by a network of local nonprofit partners.

Event Locations and Regional Partners

To ensure the event is tailored to local needs, OpenAI collaborated with regional partners in the following cities:

  • Oakland, CA: TechSoup
  • Los Angeles, CA: Center for Nonprofit Management and Goldhirsh Foundation
  • Salinas, CA: Digital NEST
  • Denver, CO: Community Resource Center, Colorado Nonprofit Association, and Philanthropy Colorado
  • Dallas, TX: Dallas, TX – Heartland Forward, North Texas Commission, and NTEN
  • Chicago, IL: NTEN
  • Columbus, OH: The Columbus Foundation
  • New York City, NY: Robin Hood
  • Wilmington, DE: Tech Impact and Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement (DANA)
  • Bentonville, AR: Heartland Forward

AI Application in Philanthropy

The initiative focuses on using ChatGPT to drive productivity gains and scale the ability of nonprofit leaders to think, learn, create, and build. Participants are encouraged to build tools tailored to their specific operational needs, including:

  • Case Management: Streamlining the process of managing client cases.
  • Community Outreach: Improving the way organizations connect with the people they serve.
  • Service Delivery: Enhancing the efficiency and delivery of essential services.

Participant Support and Resources

To support long-term adoption, OpenAI is providing participants with several resources beyond the one-day event:

  • Educational Hub: Access to an online resource hub on the OpenAI Academy to learn AI basics prior to the event.
  • Software Access: Every participant receives 12 months of free access to ChatGPT Plus.
  • Community Access: An online community for continued learning and peer connection.
  • After-Action Report: An update on August 14, 2025, noted that an after-action report featuring participant use cases and key takeaways on AI adoption for nonprofits is available.

Strategic Context

This initiative follows the success of the 1,000-Scientist AI Jam, which focused on US national labs researchers. According to Chris Lehane, Chief Global Affairs Officer at OpenAI, the goal is to "democratize innovation so that AI’s benefits reach as many people as possible, not just a select few."

"Nonprofits are often first to step up when communities face tough challenges, but they're usually the last to benefit from transformative and disruptive new technologies. The Nonprofit Jam flips that script – ensuring nonprofits have access to our leading AI tools."

Stephanie Cornell, Executive Director of the Walton Family Foundation, added that the event allows nonprofits to "model how to best use AI to solve real-world challenges."
