OpenAI Signals: Analysis of Global ChatGPT Adoption Trends

OpenAI has released new data via OpenAI Signals showing that ChatGPT adoption is widening and deepening globally, with users increasing both the frequency of their interactions and the variety of tasks they perform over time.

Increased User Depth and Breadth of Usage

ChatGPT users increase their engagement and explore more capabilities as they spend more time with the platform. Six months after signing up, users send 50% more messages per day and double the number of distinct tasks they attempt compared to their first 28 days of use.

This finding is based on a 0.1% sample of users who created accounts between October 15, 2025, and May 1, 2026. OpenAI defines "depth" as the number of messages sent in the previous 28 days relative to the first 28 days after account creation, and "breadth" as the cumulative number of capabilities used. Capabilities are identified using a classifier that categorizes messages into 53 distinct categories.

Accelerated Global Adoption and Regional Growth

ChatGPT adoption has grown sharply across every continent since July 2023, with the fastest relative growth occurring in Africa and Asia. This trend is particularly evident in countries with a lower Human Development Index (HDI), which have seen the fastest relative growth in weekly active users.

OpenAI attributes the accessibility of the platform to its low-cost access options, specifically the Free and Go plans. The data tracks weekly active users—defined as those who sent a message in the seven days prior to the start of each month—excluding users under 18 and countries where ChatGPT does not operate.

Diversification of the User Base

ChatGPT's user base has become more diverse in terms of gender-associated names and language usage.

Gender-Associated Usage Trends

Usage by individuals with typically female names has increased and now represents the majority of global usage. The disparity varies by region:

  • Highest female-associated usage: Brazil, Colombia, Poland, and Namibia.
  • Highest male-associated usage: Pakistan, Bangladesh, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mali.

Because OpenAI does not collect gender information, these estimates are based on name-to-gender crosswalks and exclude users whose names cannot be classified as typically masculine or feminine.

Global Language Expansion

Non-English usage now accounts for over half of all active users. While Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic are the leading non-English languages, the largest percentage increases in user share since July 2023 were seen in Uzbek, Kazakh, and Burmese.

Language data is determined by the plurality of messages sent by a user. The analysis focuses on languages with at least 1 million active users as of June 2026.
